God Did Not Give Us A Spirit of Fear

Every Christian at some point needs a reminder of the power of God in us. The constant battering from the world, the battling of the flesh against the spirit, and the buffeting of Satan, have a tendency to wear us down. Fear takes hold of us and we think in those times that we are powerless to act. Paul in his writing to Timothy reminded him of the importance of using the gift that God has given him. You are not given a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind, Paul encouraged him. Therefore, stir up (or use) the gift that is in you.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7.

When the hardship of this world makes you weary and afraid you must remember to use the gift that is in you. In order for you to use the gift, you must first understand its purpose.

In my previous article titled (, God Has Not Given Us a Spirit of Fear but of Power...What Does That Even Mean?) I pointed out that the word power in this Scripture is the English translation of the Greek word dynamis, from which we get the word dynamite. This SPIRIT OF POWER blast out and totally destroy anything that is in opposition to God. Power here is not as the world sees it. It is not a spirit of control that exalts the flesh or any one individual. It is a spirit that allows God to carry out His will and purposes through us without hindrances and without fear. How do I know this? Paul said to Timothy,

Remember that the gift of God was imparted to you when I lay my hands on you. So do not be afraid of the testimony of our Lord. And though we may suffer, we must bring the gospel to the world without fear, for God has not given us a spirit of fear. But we have the spirit of power, love and a sound mind (Ref 2 Timothy 1-7).

THE SPIRIT OF LOVE God has given us a spirit of love because love gives us compassion for people and cause us to recognize their need for salvation. When the spirit of love overtakes us then our hearts will be in readiness to carry out that which God has purposed in us. We will realize that we live not only for ourselves but for those we encounter daily. In the spirit of love, we will treat each other as God would have us and our action will bring about changes. The spirit of love cast out fear, it is not passive therefore this spirit will move us into action against injustice and wrong. The spirit of love allows us to extend ourselves bringing hope to those that are hopeless.

The SPIRIT OF A SOUND MIND speaks to being deliberate, to discipline, to self-control, and to acting with calm and balance. Paul said to Timothy in verse 8, you have to continue to preach regardless of the circumstances (suffering). The spirit of a sound mind gives the discipline needed to press through even when times are hard (As you have heard it said the battle is won in your mind). This spirit keeps the focus on the will of God, making you always cognizant of the fact that your action should draw others to Christ. The spirit of a sound mind makes you aware of the one thing that is always on the heart of God-SALVATION. The spirit of a sound mind ensures that you are not tossed about by every wind. The wind of uncertainty, doubt, hopelessness, and lack of trust in God.

This spirit brings calm and not anxiety, this spirit brings focus, this spirit brings peace. It is, therefore, your weapon to successfully fulfill that which God has purposed for you. God gave us a commission as he left this earth...Go into all the world and preach the gospel. Paul knew the commission and so he was telling Timothy, listen God has given you everything you need in order to fulfill the call of God on your life. There is no excuse, you have,

The SPIRIT OF POWER - a dynamite spirit that destroys all that is in opposition to God.

The SPIRIT OF LOVE - that gives you self-worth (knowing you are of use in the Master’s hand), the power to act, and the compassion to reach those that are lost.

The SPIRIT OF A SOUND MIND - the discipline, calm, and self-control you need to do what God has called you to regardless of the circumstances or suffering.

“For He delivered us and saved us and called us with a holy calling, a calling that leads to a consecrated life—a life set apart—a life of purpose.” 2 Timothy 1:9.

We thought this Scripture was only for our comfort when we feel afraid...well that may be, but essentially this Scripture is making you know you have everything you need to preach the gospel. To bring hope to a dying world. You are the light of the world.

“For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but He has given us a spirit of power and of love and of sound mind. So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord…” 2 Timothy 1:7-8.

This spirit was given so that we will testify of Christ. This is God’s divine plan for you. Each of us given different talents and in different measure but all with one purpose, that Christ may be seen in us and that all men may be drawn to Him. Success and an overcoming life come as you walk in God’s divine plan. Your success is not measured as the world deems success but your success comes from living a life of purpose. Obstacles will come and you will face trials but remember what God has placed in you and move forward in victory.

What does God have to say about forgiveness?

Many Christians struggle with extremely destructive emotions caused by

We console ourselves with one particularly subtle lie of the enemy, “I have forgiven him, but I want nothing to do with him.”
